At Least I Think I've Recovered

My home computer lab sort of self destructed with some software updates that kinda broke some of my selfhosted systems. I knew I was jinxing myself with a post about selfhosting being an "easy" way of data ownership. I didn't think it would take the better part of a month to solve my problems.

This isn't about the technical details of what happened to my computer lab, but a reminder of how easy it actually is to remember to backup what's important to you. Things like my photos are actually still being backed up to a "corporate" website as well as having two copies at home on different disks. All of my exercise data is treated the same, as is my other home media.

The data that I did lose was old notes that were in a selfhosted database whose software container got corrupted during a failed backup. These things were pretty low on the criticality scale, but it was something that I wished I could have retained. I did find an older archive from a previous install, but that made me consider how easy it can actually be to make sure that you have all of your selfhosted services ready to redeploy. There should at least be an acceptable version of the data backed up in case things do go wrong in the lab.

Lessons and how we learn them I suppose?
